Trendmaster Toys, known for their excellent
Independence Day and Godzilla toys, released an entire line of
Mars Attacks toys. There are Martians, flying saucers, ray guns, and robots!
There are small bendable toys, posable action figures, and large martian
leader figures. Most of the toys were produced in two different versions:
one based on the classic cards, and another based on the movie version. AND,
included with each of the bendable toys and the movie flying saucer are 1 of
3 different awesome Mars Attacks games on computer disks! No longer available
in stores, these toys were largely been gobbled up by fans and
collectors. These are, according to a Trendmasters' spokesman, the best toys
Trendmasters has ever produced!
All the toys have something cool about them. Many of them have rayguns that fire glow-in-the-dark missiles. The 6-inch and 12-inch action figures also speak Martian phrases like "ACK..GACK..GACK!" and then give the English translation like "Destroy Earth!" (press the play buttons below to hear the sounds!). The flying saucers are WAY cool, with missiles, landing gear, removable detailed Martian pilots, lights, sounds, and more. And, the 12-inch high Martian leaders also have glowing, pulsating brains! YIPES! The Brain Disintegrators (rayguns) have lights, 3 different sounds with variable speed control, and a glowing throbbing brain for a "power supply"!
Two interesting notes: 1). The Martian Spy Girl was in short
supply because a production problem limited its distribution. Also, female figures such as this
are often shipped in smaller quantities in a male-dominated market. Consequently, the Spy Girl
is extremely rare. 2). The bendable Martian Trooper's production was almost cancelled at first,
but was then re-instated. This last-minute change caused initial shipments to be in short supply.
Subsequent shipments brought higher numbers of the toy to the retail shelves.
Will there be more Mars Attacks figures? Alas, no!
Due to a lack of enthusiasm from retailers, there will be no more new toys.
Too bad!! I believe Trendmasters really enjoyed making the toys, and would
have liked to produce a second series, but business is business.
Collectors note: the toys that were available at
Kay-Bee stores were of the NON-talking variety. They were usually a few dollars
cheaper. They were produced in smaller quantities and the non-talking Spy
Girl is in even rarer numbers.
