Whoa! Topps, in what seemed to be a suprise move,
released the second in a series of two comics, entitled "Mars
Attacks High School"! The series was produced in black and white, somewhat
to the chagrin of fans who reveled in the gory primary colors of the earlier
comics. Anyway, readers will be glad to see that the mini-series is finally
concluded and that the high school kids... (well, I'm not going to spoil it
here!) The second installment was released despite rumors
that there would be no more Mars Attacks comics. After this one, however,
writer Dwight Jon Zimmerman states, "We definitely want to do more series, and
we definitely will do more when the time is right. It might be later rather than
sooner, but rest assured, when we can we will publish more MARS ATTACKS
atrocities". I guess that means that comic fans still may have something
to look forward to!
Although not a comic book, the
Non-Sport Update (NSU)
is a great magazine that often has Mars Attacks related articles.
The June/July 1997 issue featured a story by yours truly about Mars Attacks
collectables, some of which are highlighted in the
"Cool Stuff" section.
The NSU's December 1996/January 1997 issue featured a Mars Attacks cover and
an excellent article by Joyce Steel.
The January 1997 issue (#353) of MAD MAGAZINE payed
homage to Mars Attacks as only MAD could! The cover featured a close-up of a
goofy martian with the ever-smiling Alfred E. Neuman "on his mind"!
Their spoof of the movie was called "Marred Attack!" and was a
hoot of a send-up by Angelo Torres (artist) and Stan Hart (writer). As a
bonus, the back cover of the issue departed from the traditional MAD fold-in
and featured MAD's own "MAD Attacks" card set of six characters
that may be more terrifying than the Martians!
Some bad news, comic fans: Topps has
decided NOT to come out with the comic adaptation of the Tim Burton
movie! LEN BROWN of Topps has informed me that the project has been
cancelled! However, in the "Mars Attacks High School" Number 2,
there are some tantalizing sneak-peak sketches of the unpublished adaptation.
Topps released a set of 72 all-new
Widevision trading cards based on the movie. See the
Promo Card
here now and remember- you heard it and saw it here first! The cards
feature many memorable scenes from the movie as well as some
behind-the-scenes shots. The backs describe the front and also feature small
additional pictures and/or storyboard sketches. A subset of six
"Destruct-O-Rama" chase cards are produced in the
exclusive Topps Holo-Foil process. The chase cards appear to be 3-D
computer rendered reproductions of six of the most unforgettable
original cards like "Destroying a Dog" and "Crushed
to Death". The Holo-Foil process gives the cards a sparkly
effect, as if you were looking into a snowy TV monitor. They're way
cool!
In 1997, Image Comics and
Topps produced TWO crossover mini-series of 4 comics each.
In "Mars Attacks the Savage Dragon", the Martians face
their greatest foe yet: "Savage Dragon" (or is he their
greatest asset)?! And, the Martians take on all the Image
heroes in "Mars Attacks the Image Universe"!
